Transportation of GMO

Transportation of genetically modified organisms in Denmark must comply with a number of executive orders and can require a permit.

Transportation with GMOs must comply with the demands written in:

The executive order on transport and notification of marketing of genetically modified organisms approved for marketing in another country within the EU (In Danish)

The European Convention on the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) and Signature Protocol (In Danish).

Regulation

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency administrates the environmental regulation regarding contained use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in research, production and transportation.

Transportation that requires a permit

In two cases, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency must approve of the transportation prior to the transport:

  • If the GMO is considered particularly environmentally hazardous
  • If the transport or import does not meet the demands for labelling and packaging

A fee is charged in relation to approvals of transportation of GMOs.

Transportation that is legal without a permit

If the GMO complies with a number of demands in the executive order, it can be legally transported without a permit. The transportation of GMO must always comply with the ADR.

Emergency Plan for Transportation

If there is a potential risk to the surrounding environment concerning the transport of GMOs, the shipper should work out an emergency plan before the transportation begins.
