Water at home

The best drinking water in the world
Danes can drink water straight from the tap. This is because Denmark has some of the world's best drinking water.
Groundwater suitable for production of drinking water can be extracted from almost everywhere in Denmark; drinking water which is clean and tasty.
Clean drinking water from the subsurface
In Denmark we protect our groundwater by preventing contamination from pollution. In other words Danish groundwater policy is based on prevention rather than treatment. This means that Danish drinking water is produced from the cleanest possible groundwater
Price cap on drinking water and waste water
There are rules on the maximum amount Danish water and waste water utilities can demand from consumers and there are rules on the activities, utilities can perform. The rules are administered by the Danish Enviromental Protection Agency.
Water loss
Danish drinking water providers have one of the lowest water-loss rates in the world. This is confirmed by the website www.leakssuite.com, run by one of the world's leading experts on the subject, Allan Lambert, who is part of the Water Loss Specialist Group, International Water Association (IWA).

Waste water
There are more than 1,000 treatment plants in Denmark and these take waste water from households, enterprises and institutions. The plants treat the waste water to remove substances harmful to the aquatic environment.
The Water Sector Reform Act entered into force in 2009 and has subsequently been evaluated.
