Plastic is many different things. It can be hard or soft. It can be black, white or dyed in many different colours. Different chemicals are behind the various textures and colours and sometimes these can indicate whether the plastic contains Candidate List substances. Candidate List substances in plastic may include phthalates, flame retardants, stabilisers and colourants.

Some of the Candidate List substances you can find in plastic:

  • DecaBDE (CAS No. 1163-19-5)
  • 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(5-chlorobenzotriazol-2-yl)phenol (UV-327) (CAS No. 3864-99-1)
  • Bisphenol A (CAS No. 80-05-7)
  • Tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate (CAS No. 115-96-8)

Is the plastic material soft, or is it flexible (garden hose, bathing pool)?

It may contain one or more of the following phthalates

  • DEPH (CAS No. 117-81-7)
  • DBP (CAS No. 84-74-2)
  • DIBP (CAS No. 84-69-5)
  • BBP (CAS No. 85-68-7)
