Control and penalties in low emission zones
Once within a low emission zone, you may be asked to produce documentation regarding your vehicle.
Control in the zones
Firstly, municipal inspectors may ask to see documentation when you are visiting a company.
Secondly, the municipality traffic wardens may ask to see documentation, when you park in a low emission zone.
Thirdly, municipal inspectors can ask to see the documentation when inspecting businesses within the low emission zone.
Finally, the police may ask to see documentation at routine roadside checks. Moreover, both inspectors and traffic wardens may call on the police when needed.
From 1 November 2011, only heavy-duty diesel-powered vehicles displaying the necessary label are allowed to enter the low emission zones in Denmark. The label replaces the need for bringing documentation regarding the vehicle's engine standard etc.
You can either:
- order the low emission zone label on-line or
- visit a Danish vehicle inspection facility
Penalties in the zones
If your vehicle – or documentation – does not meet the requirements, you will receive a fine.
- Fines are set by a Danish court and range from DKK 5.000 to 20.000.
- The police are authorized to withhold the vehicle, until payment is secured.
